Postpartum Ceremony

A closing rite to gather and integrate after birth.

Following the profound opening of pregnancy and labour, a Postpartum Ceremony supports the body and mind in coming back together again. It offers a space to rest, to be cared for, and to gently reorient in the early days, weeks, or months of motherhood.

This is a ceremony for the mother — a recognition of the incredible work she has done, and a way of marking the transition that has taken place.

A group of people sitting on the floor participating in a spiritual or meditation session. The setting includes cushions, a low table with offerings, candles, and flowers, creating a serene atmosphere.

What this ceremony is

A Postpartum Ceremony is a traditional closing rite found in many cultures. It’s designed to support recovery and integration after birth.

Where birth opens the body, the nervous system, and the psyche, this ceremony helps to gather together what’s been expanded — physically, emotionally, and energetically.

It offers a held, attentive space where the mother can be supported by others, or held one-to-one, depending on what’s needed.

Each ceremony is shaped in dialogue with you, taking into account your birth experience, circumstances, and the kind of support you want.

What happens

We begin with a preparatory conversation (30 minutes) to understand what’s needed and to shape the ceremony together.

On the day, I arrive in advance to prepare the space.

We begin with a simple grounding.

The ceremony may include:

– Gentle opening ceremony
– Space to share and reflect on the birth experience
– Touch-based practices such as massage and anointing
– Rebozo wrapping, supporting the body to feel held, contained, and gathered
– Song, drumming, and moments of stillness

The ceremony closes slowly, allowing time for integration and quiet transition back into the rhythm of daily life.

Why it matters

After birth, attention often shifts quickly away from the mother.

This ceremony returns that attention to her.

It creates a space where her experience can be acknowledged, her body supported, and the transition into motherhood marked and integrated.

Rather than moving on too quickly, this allows what’s happened to be received — physically, emotionally, and relationally.
